Best Home Based Business in 2015 and Beyond

best home based digital businessIf you’re a follower of this blog, chances are you’ve thought about starting a home based business using the internets before (and yes, I did just pull a Bush plural on that one!).

You may have even tried your hand at a business or two, and are trying to figure out how to take things to the next level.

In this post I’ll go through a few of my ideas for the best home based businesses in 2015, keeping in mind the ever-changing world of internet marketing and how to stay profitable online.

Sell a Product

In my opinion, the best business hands down is one where you control the product. This might be a digital information product, like a course, or a physical product you have designed and manufactured, or even a dropshipping business.

The point is simply to be in charge of your own product, and make sure that you control some sort of intellectual property around it.

If you’re going to go this route, your best bet is to start with one of the existing learning platforms out there, like Udemy. These platforms will let you upload and host your course for free, and will even take care of a sizable part of your own marketing, and work to sell the course for you.

It’s a great, low cost way to get going. Click here to learn more about creating an Udemy course.

Affiliate Businesses

If you don’t have a product or don’t know how to develop one, affiliate marketing is still a valid option for earning money online. Affiliate businesses account for a huge sum of $15+ billion annually, which is a sizable chunk of all online marketing budgets.

From an entrepreneurial perspective, building an affiliate marketing business has a very low barrier to entry. While this makes it easy and low cost to start, it also means that in the long run you’re going to face a fair amount of competition. And, keep in mind that most of the profits are likely going to the company that owns the product, rather than your own bottom line, so be careful how you plan to scale this.

 Amazon Selling

Another great business model that’s emerged for the digital entrepreneur is Amazon selling.

Under this model, the idea is to choose popular products on Amazon, which you then can source wholesale and resell for a profit.

The key to having a profitable business under this model is to learn a bit about SEO and make sure that you rank for the key terms you’re trying to sell, either with an external webpage or within the Amazon algorithm itself.

What To Look Out for with “All in One” Marketing Courses Online

online marketing courseOne question we get from many of our perspective clients before hiring us is why they would need to work with out agency in order to set a program for their own internal marketing training.

There are literally hundreds of marketing trainings and courses available online, for a wide variety of prices, so why would they need to take an additional step of hiring out the planning process to a specific agency?

Great question.

The answer is really quite simple: more often than not (and especially when it comes to online marketing information) you get what you pay for.

When Online Marketing Courses Are Great

Firstly, I want to take a moment to point out that I’m not trying to pick on any specific internet marketing courses.

There are many truly high quality sets of information out there, with either great compilations of material or custom made trainings.

The problem is that, unless you already know the basics of digital marketing, you won’t know where to begin and are more likely to be led down a bunch of side alleys and distractions before figuring out what you really need.

Internet marketing courses are great if you already know exactly what information you need to learn. Then you can go out and find a course that will teach you that.

If you’re starting from scratch, however, it’s unlikely that you truly know what you need.Unless you take a general university-level course, like those provided by Coursera, I hate to say it, but you don’t have a clue.

Even if you’ve narrowed it down to a specific field, like social media marketing or SEO, you still don’t know what you’re looking to gain from the course…other than a general idea of improving your knowledge on the topic.

So, that’s where we come in. We make sure that we take an objective-focused approach, and then help you narrow down the right, specific knowledge-sets and technical skills you need to be successful.

Where Internet Marketing Classes Fail

internet guruInternet marketing classes fail miserably when it comes to helping novices get an unbiased sense of the landscape.

Sometimes this failure is – dare I say – intentional, since the course is a blatant attempt to try to sell you on other services. It’s easy to find lists of the best courses, most of which have lovely affiliate links attached with the blogger earning money from the recommendation.

In this case, it’s not uncommon to see entire courses designed to “teach” you that what you really need is to solve the exact problem their software solves, or their service provides.

One example is the wealthy affiliate university scam, which shows you the “truth” about internet marketing while setting you up on their own software system, using their hosting, their keyword tools, an convincing you to commit for at least a year before deciding whether or not you’ll even get a glimpse of success!

That’s just one example, and for a more detailed review check out this video:

But, the point I’m really trying to make is much broader. It’s that there are hundreds of self-proclaimed gurus out their, many of whom have ulterior motives for giving you valuable information away for free or next to nothing (yes, a few hundred dollars for a course is next to nothing).

If you really want to be successful with your internet marketing efforts, you need to be willing to invest the time and money in designing a program that will actually work for you, not just deciding one day to learn how to make money flipping cars, or something random like that.

In the long run, not only will the ROI be significantly higher, but you’ll have saved yourself a massive headache and not wasted months, if not years of your time trying to go it alone by following along with a simple course.
